                                        Medical College Lofts
                                             289 Sumach Street

289 Sumach St
This is a sturdy brick structure built in 1890 in the Romanesque Revival style.   Between 1890 and 1905, the College existed as a training college in defiance of the University of Toronto which refused to accept women to medical school.  Finally, when the U of T changed it’s policies in 1905, the school served for a time as dispensary for the Women’s College Hospital  until it was sold for use as an industrial building. After decades of neglect, the building was purchased by developer Bob Mitchell, and the façade was restored in 1984.  The interior was transformed into 10 two and three storey loft residences. The developer used photos of the building from an 1898 medical calendar, discovered behind the walls of the building, to restore the details of the original building. The interior reflects both the historical and industrial elements of the building’s history. The interiors have lots of character with high ceilings, exposed brick walls, wood beams, skylights, fireplaces, and walk-out to terraces. They range from one bedroom to three bedroom layouts. This is located in historic Cabbagetown, close to the downtown core and nearby to several parks.
